The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal People, met at 10:03 a.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Landon Pearson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Andreychuk, Bryden, Johnson, Pearson, Taylor, Tkachuk and Twinn.(8)

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 18, 1997, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-12, An Act providing for self-government by the first nations of Canada.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada:

George DaPont, Director General, Government Relations.

From the Department of Justice:

Wendy Reid, Senior Counsel.

Mr. DaPont and Ms Reid made statements and answered questions.

At 11:48 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
