The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Bolduc Cools, De Bané, Landry, Lavoie-Roux, Mercier, Moore, Rizzuto and Stratton (10).

In attendance from the Library of Parliament, Research Branch: Guy Beaumier.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Coalition for Biomedical & Health Research:

Dr. Barry McLennan, Chair and Associate Dean, Research, College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan;

Clément Gauthier, Executive Director.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 28, 1995, the Committee returned to the examination of Main Estimates 1995-96 (Consideration of the Canada Health and Social Transfer (CHST)), by order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 12, 1996.

Dr. McLennan made a presentation following which, he and Dr. Gauthier answered questions.

The Chair introduced and welcomed Sergei Kutukov, Deputy Chief of Staff, Federal Assembly of Russia.

At 12:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
