The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 5:15 p.m., this day, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Mabel DeWare, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Bosa, Bryden, Cohen, Cools, DeWare, Losier-Cool, Murray, Petten, Phillips, Rompkey and Simard (11).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Kinsella and Roux (2).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Rick Clarke, President.

From the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce:

Michel Desjardins, Executive Director;

Jeff Kelly, Entrepreneur.

From the Canadian Conference of the Arts:

Keith Kelly, National Director;

Philippa Borgal, Policy Analyst.

From the Economic Council of New Brunswick Inc.:

Anne E. Bertrand, President;

Jean-Paul Desjardins, Executive Director.

From the Fish, Food and Allied Workers:

Earle McCurdy, President.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 30, 1996, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-12, An Act respecting employment insurance in Canada. (See Proceedings of the Committee dated June 3, 1996, Issue No. 4.)

Mr. Clarke made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Desjardins and Mr. Jeff Kelly made statements and answered questions.

Mr. Keith Kelly made a statement and, with Ms Borgal, answered questions.

At 7:25 p.m. the meeting was suspended.

At 7:35 p.m. the meeting resumed.

Ms Bertrand made a statement and, with Mr. Desjardins, answered questions.

Mr. McCurdy made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
