The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:05 a.m., this day, in Room 160-S Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Watt, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Gill, Johnson, Pearson, St. Germain, P.C. and Watt (8).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett; Research staff of the committee: Rosemarie Kuptana, Konrad Sioui, Jean-Guy Desgagné, Gary Scherbain.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

Rémy "Kak'wa" Kurtness, Chief Negotiator;

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the committee continued its examination of aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, November 3, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference)

Chief René Simon, Chief Denis Ross, Chief Clifford Moar and Mr. Rémy "Kak'wa" Kurtness made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 10:15 a.m., Mr. Jim Sinclair, Mr. Ron Crowe and Mr. Tony Côté made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:25 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the committee continued its examination of aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, November 3, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Ms Sharon H. Venne, Chief Jonas Sangris and Chief Don Balsillie made an opening statement and answered questions.

Ms Venne tabled a UN document, the "Study on treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements between States and indigenous populations," which was retained by the clerk as Exhibit 5900-1.36/A1-SS1, 18 "1."

Ms Venne tabled another document, "In the Spirit and Intent of Treaty 8 Coexistence in Akaitcho Territory," which was retained by the clerk as Exhibit 5900-1.36/A1-SS1, 18 "2."

At 7:30 p.m., the meeting suspended.

At 7:35 p.m., the meeting resumed.

Mr. Ron Jamieson, Senior Vice-President of the Bank of Montreal, made an opening statement and answered questions.

Mr. Jamieson tabled a document entitled "Aboriginal Banking," which was retained by the Clerk as Exhibit 5900-1.36/A1-SS1, 18 "3."

At 8:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
