The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, met at 9:05 a.m., this day, in Room 160-S Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Watt, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Berntson, Chalifoux, Gill, Johnson, Pearson, St. Germain, P.C., Tkachuk and Watt (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett, Research staff of the committee: Rosemarie Kuptana, Coordinator; Konrad Sioui, First Nations Specialist.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 31, 1998, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-14, An Act providing for self-government by the first nations of Canada. (See Issue No. 15, Tuesday, December 1, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

The Honourable Senator Tkachuk introduced the witnesses and made introductory remarks.

Mr. Mike McKinney made an opening statement and, together with Mrs. Catherine Twinn and Mr. Martin Henderson, answered questions.

At 11:25 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
