The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, met at 5:12 p.m., this day, in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Watt, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Berntson, Gill, Johnson, Mahovlich, Pearson and Watt (8).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett; Research Staff of the committee: Rosemarie Kuptana, Co-ordinator; Konrad Sioui, First Nations Specialist and Jean-Guy Desgagné, Communications.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Indian Taxation Advisory Board:

Chief Clarence "Manny" Jules.

As an individual:

Mr. Martin Dunn, Consultant.

From the First Nations Forum:

Mr. Sol Sanderson, Chairman;

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the committee continued its examination of aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, November 3, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Chief Clarence "Manny" Jules made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 6:15 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 6:25 p.m., the meeting resumed.

Mr. Martin Dunn made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 7:10 p.m., Mr. Sol Sanderson, Chief Eddy Head and Chief Roy Head made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 8:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

At 9:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
