The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Watt, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Chalifoux, Gill, Johnson, Mahovlich, Pearson, Robertson, St. Germain, P.C. and Watt (11).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Maheu (1).

In attendance: Researchers: Larry Chartrand, Jennifer Dickson, Rosemarie Kuptana and Konrad Sioui.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs:

Grand Chief Rod Bushie;

Chief Michael Lawrenchuk;

Chief Harvey Nepinak.

From the Metis Nation of Alberta:

Ms Audrey Poitras, President;

Mr. Lorne Gladue, Director of Federal-Provincial Initiatives;

Mr. Bruce Gladue, Research and Development Advisor.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the committee continued its examination of aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, November 3, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Grand Chief Rod Bushie, Chief Michael Lawrenchuk and Chief Harvey Nepinak made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 10:35 a.m., Ms Audrey Poitras made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Bruce Gladue, answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 13, 1999, the committee began its examination of Bill C-49, An Act providing for the ratification and the bringing into effect of the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management.

Mr. Bob Watts made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Kerry Kipping and Ms Geneviève Thériault, answered questions.

At 7:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
