The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Austin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Christensen, DeWare, Gill, Pearson, Sibbeston, Tkachuk and Watt (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Grafstein, Sparrow and Wilson (3).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley and Tonina Simeone; From the Senate Committees Directorate: Josée Thérien, Legislative Clerk.

WITNESSES:

From the Assembly of First Nations:

Phil Fontaine, National Chief;

Roger Jones, Counsel.

Phil Fontaine made an opening statement and answered questions.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2000, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-9, An Act to give effect to the Nisga'a Final Agreement. (See Issue No. 3, Wednesday, February 16, 2000 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

At 10:00 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 6:00 p.m., this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Austin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Chalifoux, Christensen, DeWare, Gill, Pearson, Sibbeston, Tkachuk and Watt (10).

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2000, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-9, An Act to give effect to the Nisga'a Final Agreement. (See Issue No. 3, Wednesday, February 16, 2000 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

The following legislative budget for fiscal year 2000-2001 was considered:

SUMMARY OF EXPENDITURES

Other Expenditures 500
TOTAL $9 500

After debate, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux moved adoption of the budget.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 6:05 p.m., Ken Georgetti made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 6:35 p.m., Robert Hill and James Bryant made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 7:08 p.m., Mayor Jack Talstra made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 7:35 p.m., Professor Stephen A. Scott made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 8:25 p.m., Bill Young made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 8:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
