The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:00 a.m., this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Austin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators: Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Chalifoux, Christensen, DeWare, Gill, Pearson and Watt (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Rompkey, P.C.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley and Tonina Simeone.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

After saying a few words about Bill C-9, An Act to give effect to the Nisga'a Final Agreement, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Austin, P.C., offered the committee his resignation.

The committee thanked the Honourable Senator Austin, P.C., for his contribution as Chair of the committee.

The Clerk of the committee presided over the election of the new Chair.

The Honourable Senator Watt moved, -- That the Honourable Senator Chalifoux be Chair of this Committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 9:05 a.m., the committee went in camera to discuss future business.

Tom Lee, Chief Executive Officer, and Céline Gaulin, Executive Director, Park Establishment and Protected Areas Cooperation, Parks Canada, made a presentation on a possible study for the Committee to undertake on economic development for Aboriginal communities in and around parks north of 60.

At 11:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
