The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 9:32 a.m., in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Christensen, Cochrane, Fraser, Johnson, Pearson, Rompkey, P.C., Sibbeston and Tkachuk (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Hubley and Wilson (2).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Mary Hurley and Tonina Simeone.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 5, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill S-24, An Act to implement an agreement between the Mohawks of Kanesatake and Her Majesty in right of Canada respecting governance of certain lands by the Mohawks of Kanesatake and to amend an Act in consequence. (See Issue No. 1, Wednesday, April 25, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference).

WITNESSES:

Grand Chief James Gabriel, Mohawks of Kanesatake;

T. Brenda Etienne, Senior Negotiator, Mohawks of Kanesatake;

Anjali Choksi, Legal Council.

Grand Chief Gabriel made an opening statement and then answered questions.

At 11:05 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
