The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:00 a.m., this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Christensen, Gill, Hubley, Léger, Sibbeston and Tkachuk (7).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Tonina Simeone.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Human Resources Development Canada:

Mr. Phil Jensen, Assistant Deputy Minister, Employment Programs Branch;

Mr. John Kozij, Director, Aboriginal Strategic Policy, Strategy and Coordination, Strategic Policy;

Mr. Henry Holik, Director, Program Management, National Secretariat on Homelessness;

Mr. Rick Magus, Manager, Aboriginal Affairs, Manitoba Region.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 27, 2001, the committee proceeded to its examination of issues affecting urban Aboriginal youth, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters. (See Issue No. 6, Tuesday, October 23, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Messrs Jensen, Holik and Magus made an opening statement and together answered questions.

At 10:50 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
