The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:00 a.m., this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carney, P.C., Chalifoux, Christensen, Cochrane, Gill, Hubley, Johnson, Léger, Pearson and Sibbeston (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Tonina Simeone and Mary Hurley.

Mr. Fred Caron, Assistant Deputy Minister, Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat;

Ms Susan Anzolin, Officer, Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians Division.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 27, 2001, the committee proceeded to its examination of issues affecting urban Aboriginal youth, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters. (See Issue No. 6, Tuesday, October 23, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Caron made an opening statement and, with Ms Anzolin, answered questions.

Mr. Caron, tabled reference materials entitled "Guide To Federal Initiatives For Urban Aboriginal People"(Exhibit No. 5900-1.37/A1-SS-2, 8 "1"), "Profile of the Urban Aboriginal Population, Canada, 1996" (Exibit No. 5900-1.37/A1-SS-2, 8 "2") and "Urban Aboriginal People in Western Canada: Realities and Policies" (Exibit No. 5900-1.37/A1-SS-2, 8 "3"), with the Clerk of the Committee.

At 10:50 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
