The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met at 4:32 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Buchanan, P.C., Finnerty, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Spivak and Taylor (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Lynne Myers, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on May 2, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-4. (See Issue No. 9, Tuesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 17, 2001 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

APPEARING:

The Honourable Ralph E. Goodale, P.C., M.P., Minister responsible for Canadian Wheat Board and Minister of Natural Resources.

WITNESSES:

Officials from Natural Resources of Canada:

Anne-Marie Fortin, Legal Counsel, Legal Services;

Graham Campbell, Director, Office of the Energy Research and Development.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

The witnesses from Natural Resources of Canada submitted a brief.

At 5:40 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met at 9:31 a.m. this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Mira Spivak, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Christensen, Cordy, Kenny, Spivak and Taylor (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Lynne Myers, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 1, 2001, the Committee proceeded to examine issues as may arise from time to time relating to energy, the environment and natural resources, including the continuation and completion of the study on Nuclear Reactor Safety. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, February 22, Tuesday, February 27 and Thursday, March 22, 2001, for full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada:

Sheila Fraser, Interim Auditor General;

Richard Smith, Principal, Audit Operations Branch;

John Wiersema, Assistant Auditor General.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

At 10:25 a.m., the committee proceeded in camera to discuss its future agenda.

At 10:30 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
