The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 9:00 a.m., in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Peter Stollery, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Bolduc, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Grafstein, Graham, P.C., and Stollery (9).

In attendance: John Wright, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Institute of European and Russian Studies, Carleton University:

Professor Andrea Chandler;

Professor Joan Debardeleben;

Professor Piotr Dutkiewicz.

From Schulich School of Business, York University:

Professor James Gillies.

The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study on developments in Russia and the Ukraine (See committee proceedings of March 13, 2001, Issue No. 1).

Professor DeBardeleben and Professor Chandler made statements and answered questions.

At 10:40 a.m. the committee suspended its work for 10 minutes.

After debate,

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Corbin - That the 8 members of the committee that will participate at the Fact Finding Mission in Washington May 14-16, 2001 be: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Bolduc, Corbin, Di Nino, Grafstein, Graham, P.C., and Stollery.

The question being put on the motion,

It was resolved in the affirmative.

Professor Dutkiewicz and Professor Gillies made statements and answered questions.

At 12:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
