The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 7:05 p.m., in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Peter A. Stollery, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Grafstein, Graham, P.C., Setlakwe and Stollery (9).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg and John Wright.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Export Development Corporation:

Mr. Lorne Cutler;

Mr. Fergal O'Reilly.

From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police:

Mr. Angus Smith.

The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study on developments in Russia and the Ukraine (see committee proceedings of March 13, 2001, Issue No. 1).

Mr. Angus Smith, Mr. Fergal O'Reilly and Mr. Lorne Cutler made statements and answered questions.

At 8:50 p.m., the committee agreed to sit in camera to study its future Business.

Concerning the Russia and Ukraine study:

It was agreed - That the trip to Russia and Ukraine be postponed until next spring.

It was agreed - That the committee complete its schedule of meetings for the study this fall.

It was also agreed - That the research staff of the committee prepare a written summary of the work done by the committee on its Russia and Ukraine study.

Concerning a possible future study on terrorism:

It was agreed - That the research staff narrow the scope of a possible study and present it at the next meeting of the committee.

At 9:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
