The Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration met this day at 8:33 a.m. to organize the activities of the committee.

Dr. Gary O'Brien, Acting Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, as your acting clerk, it is my duty to preside over the election of the chair. I am ready to receive nominations.

[Translation]

Senator Poulin: I'm honoured to nominate Senator Richard Kroft. Obviously, his experience as chairman of the Finance Subcommittee, as well as his experience of many years as a businessman will be of service not only to the Board of Internal Economy but also to the institution as a whole.

[English]

Mr. O'Brien: If there are no other nominations, is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

Mr. O'Brien: I invite the Honourable Senator Kroft to take the chair.

Senator Richard H. Kroft (Chairman) in the Chair.

The Chairman: Honourable senators, I thank you for your confidence in me.

I should like to move immediately to nominations for the position of deputy chair of this committee.

[Translation]

Senator Comeau: It is with great pleasure, Mr. Chairman, that I nominate Senator Mabel DeWare, a woman we trust. We think that she will do excellent work.

The Chairman: Hearing no other nominations, I declare the nominations closed. Senator DeWare is acclaimed as the deputy chair of the committee.

The next order of business is a motion to print the committee's proceedings. Do I hear such a motion?

Senator Kenny: I so move, Mr. Chairman.

The Chairman: Is it agreed, honourable senators?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The motion is carried.

The next order of business is a motion with regard to the first report pursuant to rule 104. Is there such a motion, honourable senators?

Senator Comeau: I so move, Mr. Chairman.

The Chairman: Is it agreed, honourable senators?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The motion is carried.

I now propose that we go in camera.
