The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9:34 a.m., in Room 256, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Lise Bacon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Callbeck, Finestone, P.C., Gill, Oliver and Spivak (7).

In attendance: Martin Brennan, Special Advisor to the Committee and Joseph Dion, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 6, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-34. (See Issue No. 17, Tuesday, November 20, 2001 and Wednesday, November 21, 2001 for full text of the Order of Reference).

WITNESSES:

Officials from Transport Canada:

Mr. Gaétan Boucher, Director General, Safety Programs, Strategies and Coordination;

Ms Sherril Besser, Senior Counsel, Legal Services;

Ms Kimberly Ellard, Director, Strategies and Issues.

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

Transport Canada submitted a brief.

At 10:48 a.m., It was agreed - That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
