The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 3:30 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Marjory LeBreton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators, Banks, Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, Fraser, Keon, Kinsella, LeBreton, Léger, Morin, Murray and Roche (12).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator, Milne.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Howard Chodos.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday February 11, 2003, the committee began its consideration of Bill S-13, An Act to amend Statistics Act.

WITNESSES:

From the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada:

George Radwanski, Privacy Commissioner.

From Statistics Canada:

Yvan P. Fellegi, Chief Statistician.

George Radwanski made a presentation and answered questions.

Yvan Fellegi made a presentation and answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the committee resumed.

The Honourable Senator Murray, moved that the committee dispense with clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S- 13, An Act to amend the Statistics Act.

After debate,

The questions being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was agreed that the Deputy Chair report the bill without amendments, at the next sitting of the Senate.

At 5:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
