The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 3:30 p.m, this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Marjory LeBreton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, P.C., Keon, LeBreton, Léger, Morin, Roche, Rossiter (10).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Howard Chodos.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, the committee began its consideration of issues arising from, and developments since, the tabling of its final report on the state of the health care system in Canada in October 2002, in particular, issues concerning mental health and mental illness.

WITNESSES:

From the Province of British Columbia:

Mr. Patrick Storey, Chair, Minister's Advisory Council on Mental Health.

From Queen's University:

Ms. Heather Stuart, Associate Professor, Community Health and Epidemiology.

From the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health:

Ms. Jennifer Chambers, Empowerment Council Coordinator.

Patrick Storey, Heather Stuart and Jennifer Chambers each made a presentation and answered questions

At 5:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
