The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day, at 3:43 p.m. in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cook, Cordy, Keon, Kirby, LeBreton, Morin, Robertson, Roche and Rossiter (10).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: David Johansen.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 25, 2003, the committee began its consideration of Bill S-7, An Act to protect heritage lighthouses.

From the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society:

The Honourable J. Michael Forrestall and the Honourable Pat Carney each made a presentation and answered questions.

Lyn Elliot-Sherwood, Michel Audy, George Da Pont each made a presentation.

The Honourable Senator Morin moved, that the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology empower the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure to present a budget request to the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budget and Administration and to the Senate up to the amount of $10,000.00 on the proposed order of reference on public health, once the order is adopted by the Senate.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was agreed that a motion be presented to the Senate seeking permission to sit during the summer adjournment on September 16, 17, 18 if the Senate is not sitting.

James Delgado, Dan Conlin and Barry MacDonald each made a presentation.

It was agreed that the committee dispense with clause by clause consideration of Bill S-7, An Act to protect Heritage Lighthouse.

It was agreed that the Bill S-7, An Act to protect heritage lighthouse be reported to the Senate without amendments.

At 5:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
