The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 3:45 p.m, this day, in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cook, Corby, Fairbairn, P.C., Kirby, LeBreton, Robertson, Roche (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Howard Chodos.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 19, 2003, the committee began its study on the infrastructure and governance of the public health system in Canada, as well as on Canada's ability to respond to public health emergencies arising from outbreaks of infectious disease.

WITNESS:

From the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (by video conference):

Dr. James Hughes, Director, National Center for Infectious Diseases.

James Hughes answered questions.

The Honourable Senator LeBreton moved — That Dr. James Hughes' statement, as distributed, be tabled with the committee as an exhibit and that it appear as an appendix in the committee Proceedings. (Exibit 5900-2.37/S2-SS-5-9, "1")

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator LeBreton moved — That the committee authorises the Subcommittee on Procedure and Agenda to approve the final report on public health emergencies arising from infectious disease.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 5:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
