The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:02 a.m. in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Chaput, Christensen, Gill, Hubley, Léger, Pearson and Tkachuk (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator St. Germain, P.C.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Tonina Simeone and from Nation Media: Guy Freedman.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 29, 2002, the committee continued its examination of issues affecting urban Aboriginal youth in Canada, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters.

WITNESSES:

From the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation:

John Kim Bell, Founder and President.

Mr. Bell made a presentation and answered questions.

At 10:55 a.m. the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:30 p.m. in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carney, Chalifoux, Chaput, Christensen, Gill, Hubley, Léger, Pearson, Sibbeston and Stratton (10).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Tonina Simeone.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 29, 2002, the committee continued its examination of issues affecting urban Aboriginal youth in Canada, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters.

Jonathan Potskin, Director.

From the Regina Native Youth Community Services:

Tom Warner, Executive Director.

From the Calgary Urban Indian Youth Centre:

Chief Patricia Waite, Advisor.

The witnesses made introductory remarks and answered questions.
