The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:05 a.m. in the La Verendrye Room, Fort Garry Hotel, 222 Broadway Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Chaput, Johnson, Léger, Pearson, Sibbeston and Tkachuk (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator St. Germain, P.C.

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament and Kate McCarthy from the Office of the Honourable Senator Johnson.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 29, 2002, the committee continued its examination of issues affecting urban aboriginal youth in Canada, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters.

WITNESSES:

Giselle Campbell, Employment Equity Advisor.

From the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce:

Crystal Laborero, Director, Aboriginal Employment
Initiative.

The committee was led in a prayer song.

Chief White Bird and Ms. McKay presented a brief, made a presentation and answered questions.

At 10:20 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 10:30 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting.

Mr. Bostrom made a presentation and answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 11:13 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting.

Ms. Cowan, Ms. Campbell and Ms. Laborero each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 12:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
