The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:10 a.m. in the Glenora Room, Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel, 10155 — 105th Street, Edmonton, Alberta, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carney, P.C., Chalifoux, Pearson and Sibbeston (4).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament and Kate McCarthy from the Office of Senator Johnson.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 29, 2002, the committee continued its examination of issues affecting urban aboriginal youth in Canada, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters.

WITNESSES:

Sonja Willier, Language Arts Facilitator, Aboriginal Learning Centre;

Pam Sparklingeyes, Cultural Coordinator, Aboriginal Learning Centre.

From the Ben Calf Robe School:

Sean McGuiness, Principal.

From the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology:

Eva Stang, Aboriginal Liaison Coordinator.

From the Amiskwaciy Academy:

Shirly McNeill, Assistant Vice-Principal;

Theresa Cardinal, Administrator.

From the University of Alberta:

Lewis Cardinal, Director of Native Student Services;

Brenda Jones-Smith, Coordinator.

From the Edmonton Public Schools:

Donna Leask, Supervisor, Aboriginal Education.

Ms. Stang, Ms. Sparklingeyes, Ms. Willier, and Mr. McGuiness each made introductory remarks and answered questions.

Ms. McNeil and Ms. Cardinal made a presentation and answered questions.

Ms. Leask, Mr. Cardinal, and Ms. Jones-Smith made presentations and answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Rev. Holland and Ms. Jacobs made a presentation and answered questions.

Ms. Shoush made a presentation and answered questions.

At 3:00 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 3:15 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting.

Mr. Cardinal, Ms. Coulter and Mr. Campre made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Donald made a presentation and answered questions.

At 5:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
