The Senate Committee of Selection met this day at 1:30 p.m., pursuant to rule 85(1)(b) of the Rules of the Senate, to nominate the senators to serve on select committees during the present session.

Senator Bill Rompkey (Chairman) in the Chair.

The Chairman: Honourable senators, the last time we met you honoured me with your support for this Chair. I want now to report back to you from the date of that last meeting. I have done absolutely nothing since then. Hopefully, we can accomplish something at this meeting.

It is now my responsibility to call for the nomination of senators to serve on select committees. I begin with the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.

Senator Bacon: I move that Senators Chalifoux, Christensen, Gill, Hubley, Léger, Pearson, Sibbeston and St. Germain be appointed to the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.

Senator Stratton: Mr. Chairman, I nominate the Honourable Senators Carney, Johnson, Stratton and Tkachuk.

The Chairman: It is moved by Senator Bacon, seconded by Senator Stratton, that these members serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.

Is it agreed, honourable senators?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The next committee is the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

Senator Bacon: I move that Senators Chalifoux, Day, Fairbairn, Hubley, Lapierre, Lapointe, Moore and Wiebe be appointed to the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

Senator Stratton: Mr. Chairman, I nominate the Honourable Senators Gustafson, LeBreton, Oliver and Tkachuk.

The Chairman: It is moved by Senator Bacon, seconded by Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The next committee on the list is the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.

Senator Bacon: I move that Senators Fitzpatrick, Hervieux-Payette, Kolber, Kroft, Poulin, Setlakwe, Taylor and Prud'homme be appointed to the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.

Senator Stratton: Mr. Chairman, I nominate the Honourable Senators Angus, Kelleher, Meighen and Tkachuk.

The Chairman: It is moved by Senator Bacon, seconded by Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The next committee is the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources.

Senator Bacon: I move that Senators Baker, Banks, Christensen, Finnerty, Kenny, Milne, Taylor and Watt be appointed to the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources.

Senator Stratton: Mr. Chairman, I nominate the Honourable Senators Buchanan, Cochrane, Eyton and Spivak.

The Chairman: It is moved by Senator Bacon, seconded by Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources.

The Chairman: The next committee on the list is the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries.

Senator De Bané: Mr. Chairman, I propose that the Honourable Senators Adams, Baker, Cook, Hubley, Mahovlich, Moore, Phalen and Watt be members of the committee.

Senator Stratton: Mr. Chairman, I move that the Honourable Senators Comeau, Johnson, Cochrane and Robertson be members of the committee.

The Chairman: It is moved by Senator De Bané, seconded by the Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The next committee on the list is the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign affairs.

Senator De Bané: I nominate the following senators as members of the committee: Senators Austin, Corbin, De Bané, Grafstein, Graham, Losier-Cool, Setlakwe and Stollery.

Senator Kinsella: I nominate the following senators as members of the committee: Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Carney and Di Nino.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator De Bané, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights.

Senator De Bané: I nominate the following members: Senators Jaffer, Ferretti Barth, Fraser, LaPierre, Maheu and Poy.

Senator Kinsella: I nominate Senators Rossiter, Rivest and Beaudoin.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator De Bané, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Human Rights Committee.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman:  Next is the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

Senator De Bané: I nominate the following members on the government side: Senators Austin, Bacon, Bryden, De Bané, Gauthier, Gill, Jaffer, Kroft, Poulin and Robichaud.

Senator Kinsella: I nominate Senators Angus, Atkins, Stratton, Eyton and Doody.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator De Bané, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Internal Economy Committee.

Is it agreed, honourable senators?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The next committee on the list is the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.

Senator Fairbairn: I move that Senators Baker, Bryden, Cools, Furey, Jaffer, Joyal, Pearson and Smith to be members of the committee.

Senator Kinsella: Mr. Chairman, I move that Senators Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Buchanan and Nolin be members of the committee.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator Fairbairn, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament.

Senator Fairbairn: Honourable senators, I nominate Senators Morin, Lapointe and Poy to serve on the committee.

Senator Kinsella: I nominate Senators Bolduc and Forrestall.

The Chairman: It has been moved by Senator Fairbairn, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament.

The Chairman: The next committee is the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance.

Senator Fairbairn: Honourable senators, I nominate the following senators to sit on the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance: Senators Biron, Cools, Day, Ferretti Barth, Finnerty, Furey, Gauthier and Mahovlich.

Senator Stratton: I nominate Senators Bolduc, Eyton, Doody and Murray.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator Fairbairn, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the National Finance Committee.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence.

Senator Fairbairn: I will go very slowly. I move that the following senators be members of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence: Senators Banks, Cordy, Day, Kenny, Smith and Wiebe.

Senator Stratton: I nominate Senators Atkins, Forrestall and Meighen.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator Fairbairn, seconded by Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the National Security and Defence Committee.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Committee on Official Languages.

Senator Kolber: I nominate the following senators for the Official Languages Committee: Senators Ferretti Barth, Gauthier, Lapointe, Léger, Losier-Cool and Maheu.

Senator Stratton: I nominate Senators Beaudoin, Comeau and Keon.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator Kolber, seconded by Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the Official Languages Committee. Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament.

Senator Kolber: I nominate the following senators: Senators Bacon, Grafstein, Joyal, Losier-Cool, Milne, Pépin, Rompkey, Smith and Wiebe; and independent senator, Senator Pitfield.

Senator Stratton: I nominate Senators Andreychuk, Di Nino, Murray, Robertson and Stratton.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator Kolber, seconded by Senator Stratton, that those senators serve on the Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament.

Is it agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Commons for the Scrutiny of Regulations.

Senator Kolber: I nominate the following senators: Senators Biron, Hervieux-Payette, Hubley, Moore and Phalen.

Senator Kinsella: I nominate Senators Nolin and Kelleher.

The Chairman: It has been moved by Senator Kolber, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Scrutiny of Regulations Committee.

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Next is the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications.

Senator Kolber: I nominate the following senators for the Transport and Communications Committee: Senators Adams, Biron, Callbeck, Day, Fraser, Graham, LaPierre and Phalen.

Senator Kinsella: I nominate Senators Eyton, Gustafson, Johnson and Spivak.

The Chairman: It was moved by Senator Kolber, seconded by Senator Kinsella, that those senators serve on the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications. Is it agreed?

The Chairman: Honourable senators, I would like a motion that I report.

Senator Tkachuk: I would move that motion.
