The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day in camera at 4:16 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Peter A. Stollery, presiding.

Members of the committee present: Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Downe, Mahovlich, Prud'homme, P.C., Robichaud, P.C., and Stollery (9).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Messrs. Peter Berg, Michael Holden and Blayne Haggart, analysts.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee examined a draft agenda.

It was agreed that certain witnesses would be invited to discuss some timely events such as the current situation in Ukraine.

It was agreed that the Chairman of the Committee ask the Senate for an order of reference for a special study on Africa and Canada's foreign policy in that regard.

At 5:18 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Carney, P.C., Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Downe, Mahovlich, Prud'homme, P.C., Robichaud, P.C., and Stollery (10).

Other senators present: Honourable Senators Poy and Smith, P.C. (2).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Michael Holden and Blayne Haggart, analysts.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 21, 2004, the committee proceeded to examine issues that may arise from time to time relating to foreign relations generally.

His Excellency Mykola Maimeskul, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Canada;

Vadym Prystaiko, Counsellor (Political Affairs);

Andriy Yahodovskyi, First Secretary (Political Affairs).

His Excellency Mykola Maimeskul made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
