The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met in camera at 4:10 p.m. this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Michael Kirby presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Cook, Fairbairn, P.C., Gill, Keon, Kirby and Pépin (7).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos, Research Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division; Tim Riordan, Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 7, 2004, the committee continued its examination on the state of the health care system in Canada, in particular issues concerning mental health and mental illness. (See Issue No. 1, Wednesday, October 20, 2004, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) the committee met in camera to discuss a draft agenda.

At 4:42 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met in camera at 3:55 p.m. this day, in room 356-S, Centre Block, the Honourable Michael Kirby, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cochrane, Cook, Gill, Keon, Kirby, LeBreton and Pépin (8).

It was agreed that staff be permitted to stay.

Pursuant to rules 92(2)(e) and (f) the committee met in camera to discuss a draft report and draft agenda.

It was agreed that the following budget application for the committee's special study on mental health be approved for submission to the committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

Summary of Expenditures

Professional and Other Services    $188,800
Transportation and Communication.    $689,160
All Other Expenditures    $ 36,500
Total:    $914,460

At 5 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Cook, Cordy, Keon, Kirby, Pépin and Trenholme Counsell (7).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos, Research Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division; Tim Riordan, Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division, Nicole Pogue, Intern.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
