The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 10:45 a.m. this day, in room 2, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Cochrane, Eggleton P.C., Fairbairn P.C., Keon, Munson, Nancy Ruth and Pépin (9).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Sonya Norris, Research Analyst, Science and Technology Division and Odette Madore, Research Analyst, Economics Division.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 22, 2006, the committee began its study of the issue of funding for the treatment of autism.

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Gigi Mandy, Acting Director General of Intergovernmental Affairs Directorate;

Serge Lafond, Acting Director of the Canada Health Act Division.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Rémi Quirion, Scientific Director, Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction.

Human Resources and Social Development Canada:

Caroline Weber, Director General, Office for Disability Issues.

Gigi Mandy, Rémi Quirion and Caroline Weber each made a statement. Together, all the witnesses answered questions.

At 12:16 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) the committee proceeded in camera for the purpose of considering a draft agenda.

At 12:22 p.m., the committee reconvened in public.

It was agreed that the following budget application for the committee's special study on funding for the treatment of autism be approved for submission to the Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

At 12:25 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
