The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 4:16 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cochrane, Cordy, Eggleton P.C., Fairbairn P.C., Keon, Munson, Nancy Ruth and Pépin (9).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Sonya Norris, Research Analyst, Science and Technology Division and Odette Madore, Research Analyst, Economics Division.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 22, 2006, the committee continued its study on the issue of funding for the treatment of autism. (See Issue No. 9, Thursday, November 2, 2006, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Michelle Dawson.

Canadian Autism Intervention Research Network:

Dr. Peter Szatmari, Faculty of Health Science, McMaster University.

McGill University Health Centre:

Dr. Eric Fombonne, Director of Child Psychiatry.

University of Toronto:

Marianne Ofner, Department of Public Health Science.

Michelle Dawson made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 5:10 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting.

Marianna Ofner, Peter Szatmari and Eric Fombonne each made a statement. Together, the witnesses answered questions.

At 6 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
