Proceedings of the Standing Senate Committee on
Social Affairs, Science and Technology

Issue 19 - Evidence - February 21, 2007

OTTAWA, Wednesday, February 21, 2007

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:30 p.m. to consider subcommittees.

Senator Art Eggleton (Chairman) in the chair.

[English]

The Chairman: I call to order this meeting of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. On today's agenda we have before us the resolutions with respect to the creation of the two subcommittees, which will deal with population health and the cities agenda.

Once we have formalized them, which of course we have talked about many times before, we will then go into subcommittee meetings to do a few formalities, including election of the chairman, the deputy chairman and a few other things that are on the schedule. You will have that in a few minutes. There is a budget for each subcommittee as well.

Then we will come back to the main committee meeting and deal with two documents: the reworked draft for the autism study and also an autism report communications plan. That is our work for today, and all to be done by six o'clock.

First, the establishment of the Subcommittee on Population Health and refer order of reference, which is what the title here says. We must create the committee first.

It is moved by Senator Keon that the Subcommittee on Population Health be established and that the subcommittee consist of six members. All senators have this in front of them. I do not think I need to say anything more other than that the six members are Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cochrane, Cook, Fairbairn, Keon and Pépin. All senators are invited to attend. I will be attending as much as I possibly can, but those are the six senators who will have the voting rights on the committee. Senators can see the rest of the motion there. I will not read it all unless I have a request to do that.

Do senators have any comments or questions about this motion? Is the motion agreed to?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Next I have the motion to establish the Subcommittee on Cities and refer order of reference. It is moved by Senator Munson that the Subcommittee on Cities be established, and the six members there are Honourable Senators Champagne, Cordy, Eggleton, Munson, Nancy Ruth and Trenholme Counsell.

Is there any discussion about that motion? Is the motion agreed to, senators?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Carried.

Now we have adjournment. I will officially adjourn this meeting and then the clerk will call the meeting of the Subcommittee on Population Health and then the Subcommittee on Cities.

The committee adjourned.
