The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 4:17 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C. presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cochrane, Cook, Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Fairbairn, P.C., and Keon (7).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Brian O'Neal, Research Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, the committee continued its study on current social issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities and pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, the committee continued its study on the impact of the multiple factors and conditions that contribute to the health of Canada's population — known collectively as the social determinants of health. Mr. Gribbons, Mr. Kerr and Ms. Hunter made statements and with Mr. Peacock answered questions.

At 6:04 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met in camera at 10:06 a.m., this day, in room 2, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Fairbairn, P.C., Keon, Munson, Nancy Ruth and Trenholme Counsell (8).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Brian O'Neal, Research Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, the committee continued its study of the future of literacy programs in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 17.)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee met in camera to consider a draft report.

It was moved that the committee approve the witnesses expenses of Nancy Shular who appeared as a witness on May 3, 2007 including the costs of a caregiver for her son.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:50 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 10:55 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting in public.

Ms. Donio and Ms. Thibodeau-Deguire made statements and responded to questions.

At 12:10 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
