The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:36 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Senator Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Cools, Cordy, Keon, Mercer and Stratton (6).

In attendance: Julie Cool, Philippe Le Goff and Havi Echenberg, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 1, 2007, the committee continued consideration of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1)

René Morissette, Assistant Director, Research Business and Labour Market Analysis Division:

Garnett Picot, Director General, Socio-Economic and Business Analysis;

Ted Wannell, Assistant Director, Labour and Household Analysis Division.

As individuals:

John Myles, Canada Research Chair and Professor of Sociology, University of Toronto;

Derek Hum, Professor of Economics, University of Manitoba.

Human Resources and Social Development Canada:

Maxime Fougère, Assistant Director, Labour Market Research and Forecasting.

Richard Shillington, Senior Associate.

Women Elders in Action (by videoconference):

Alice West, Chair;

Elsie Dean, Researcher;

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Picot, Mr. Morissette, Mr. Wannell and Mr. Fougère each made a presentation and, with Mr. Myles, answered questions.

At 1:57 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:04 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Hum, Mr. Shillington, Ms. West and Ms. Dean each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 3:32 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Special Senate Committee on Aging met in camera this day in, at 12:35 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Senator Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Chaput, Cools, Cordy, Keon and Mercer (6).

In attendance: Julie Cool and Michael Toye, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 1, 2007, the committee continued consideration of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain for the in camera session.

It was agreed that the committee adopt the interim draft report entitled Issues and Options for an Aging Population, and that the chair and deputy chair be empowered to make any editorial and grammatical changes required prior to the tabling the report in the Senate.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded to discuss a draft agenda.

At 1:22 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
