The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met in camera, this day, at 9:32 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Brazeau, Campbell, Dyck, Hubley, Lang, Lovelace Nicholas, Poirier, Raine, Sibbeston, St. Germain, P.C., and Stewart Olsen (11).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone and Jodi Bruhn, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

In accordance with rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered a draft agenda.

It was moved:

That senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was agreed:

That the discussion document regarding travel for the education study be approved.

It was agreed:

That the discussion document regarding suggested witnesses for the education study, be approved, as amended.

It was agreed:

That decisions regarding any further witnesses be made by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

At 10:26 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Dyck, Eaton, Hubley, Kochhar, Patterson, Poirier, St. Germain, P.C., Sibbeston and Stewart Olsen (10).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone and Jodi Bruhn, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. Ms Fraser made a statement and, together with Mr. Campbell, responded to questions.
