The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:50 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the deputy chair, the Honourable Lillian Eva Dyck, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Demers, Dyck, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Patterson, Raine and Sibbeston (8).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak and James Gauthier, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Assembly of First Nations:

Richard Jock, Chief Executive Director.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami:

Elizabeth Ford, Director of Health and Social Development.

Métis National Council:

Clément Chartier, President.

National Inuit Youth Council:

Thomasie Johnston, Board Member.

Assembly of First Nations National Youth Council:

Kluane Adamek, Executive Member.

Métis National Council:

Adrian Mrdeza, Communications Officer.

Métis Nation of Ontario:

Mitchell Case, Youth Council Member.

Mr. Jock, Ms Ford and Mr. Chartier each made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:12 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:22 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Johnston, Ms. Adamek and Mr. Case each made a statement and, together with Ms. Mrdeza, answered questions.

At 9:40 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
