The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 6:45 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Dagenais, Demers, Patterson, Raine, St. Germain, P.C., Sibbeston and Wallace (8).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak and James Gauthier, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. WITNESSES:

The Honourable Mary Polak, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation;

Steve Munro, Deputy Minister, Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada:

Joëlle Montminy, Acting Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;

Anita Boscariol, Director General, Negotiations — West.

Ms. Polak and Ms. Montminy each made a statement and, together with Ms. Boscariol, answered questions.

At 8:16 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
