The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 9:30 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Demers, Meredith, Munson, Patterson, Raine, St. Germain, P.C., and Sibbeston (8).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. WITNESSES:

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada:

Elizabeth Tromp, Assistant Deputy Minister, Office of the Federal Interlocutor;

Diane Robinson, Director, Aboriginal Relations, Office of the Federal Interlocutor;

Michael Nadler, Director General, Negotiations East.

Department of Justice Canada:

Peggy Stone, General Counsel and Director.

Ms. Tromp made a statement and, together with Ms Robinson, Mr. Nadler and Ms Stone, answered questions.

At 10:59 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:06 a.m., the committee resumed in camera and, pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that Senators' staff be permitted to remain during the in camera portion of the meeting.

At 11:30 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
