The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 6:48 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Senator Vernon White, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Demers, Meredith, Patterson, Raine, Sibbeston and White (7).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak and Wren Nasr, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the committee continued its consideration on the evolving legal and political recognition of the collective identity and rights of the Métis in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 14.)

WITNESSES:

Nation Métis Québec:

Claude Aubin, Spokesperson;

Claude Riel Lachapelle, Spokesperson.

Métis Nation of Canada:

Bryce Douglas Fequet, Founder.

Mr. Aubin and Mr. Riel Lachapelle each made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:47 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:55 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Douglas made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:22 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:28 p.m., the committee resumed in camera and pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, the committee continued its consideration of the subject-matter of those elements contained in Division 8 of Part 4 of Bill C-45, A second Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on March 29, 2012 and other measures. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 26.)

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that staff be permitted to remain during the in camera portion of the meeting.

At 8:37 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
