The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 6:45 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Dawson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dawson, Demers, Greene, Housakos, MacDonald, Mercer, Plett and Verner, P.C. (8).

In attendance: Terrence Thomas and Dillan Theckedath, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, December 9, 2013, the committee continued its study to hear from representatives from BCE Inc. (Bell Canada) and the Privacy Commissioner of Canada regarding the practice of collecting and analyzing data from Bell Canada customers for commercial purposes including targeted advertising.

WITNESSES:

Bell Canada:

Mirko Bibic, Executive Vice-President and Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer;

William Abbott, Senior Counsel and Bell Privacy Ombudsman;

Philippe Gauvin, Senior Counsel.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Bibic made a statement and, together with Mr. Abbott and Mr. Gauvin, answered questions.

At 8:04 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
