The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day at 9:30 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Joseph A. Day, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Black, Callbeck, Chaput, Day, Gerstein, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Mockler, Smith (Saurel) and Wells (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Buth (1).

In attendance: Édison Roy-César and Sylvain Fleury, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 23, 2013, the committee began its examination of the expenditures set out in the Supplementary Estimates (A) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014.

WITNESSES:

Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat:

Bill Matthews, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Management Sector;

Sally Thornton, Executive Director, Expenditure Management Sector;

Marcia Santiago, Senior Director, Expenditure Management Sector.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited:

Steve Halpenny, Vice President, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer;

Jonathan Lundy, Vice President, Chief Legal Officer.

Public Safety Canada:

Gary Robertson, Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Management Branch;

Dave Neville, Senior Director, Financial Assistance Programs.

Mr. Matthews made a statement and, together with Ms. Thornton and Ms. Santiago, answered questions.

At 10:37 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:40 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Halpenny made a statement and, together with Mr. Lundy, answered questions.

Mr. Robertson made a statement and, together with Mr. Neville, answered questions.

At 11:34 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
