The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, at 4 p.m. in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Mobina S. B. Jaffer, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Cordy, Jaffer, Munson, Ngo, Oh and White. (8).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Mitchell (1).
In attendance: Julian Walker and Laura Barnett, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, the committee began its examination of Bill C-279, An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code (gender identity).
WITNESSES:
Randall Garrison, M.P., sponsor of the bill in the House of Commons.
Canadian Human Rights Commission:
David Langtry, Acting Chief Commissioner;
Ian Fine, Secretary General.
Egale Canada:
Ryan Dyck, Director of Research and Policy.
University of Western Ontario:
Greta Bauer, Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
The chair made opening remarks.
Mr. Garrison made a presentation and answered questions.
At 4:31 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 4:34 p.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Langtry made a presentation and answered questions with Mr. Fine.
At 4:58 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5 p.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Dyck and Ms. Bauer each made a presentation and answered questions.
At 5:56 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
