The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:46 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dyck, Meredith, Moore, Ngo, Patterson, Raine, Tannas, Wallace and Watt (10).

In attendance: Julie Cool and Martha Butler, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 10, 2014, the committee continued its consideration of the subject matter of Bill C-33, An Act to establish a framework to enable First Nations control of elementary and secondary education and to provide for related funding and to make related amendments to the Indian Act and consequential amendments to other Acts.

WITNESSES:

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada:

Françoise Ducros, Assistant Deputy Minister, Education and Social Development Programs and Partnerships Sector;

Chris Rainer, Director, Strategic Policy and Planning Directorate, Education Branch.

Department of Justice Canada:

Martin Reiher, Acting General Counsel and Director, Operations and Programs, Legal Services Unit.

Ms. Ducros made a statement and, together with Mr. Rainer and Mr. Reiher, answered questions.

At 8:45 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
