The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Chaput, Eggleton, P.C., Frum, Merchant, Ogilvie, Rivard, Seidman, Stewart Olsen and Wallace (10).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, the committee continued its study on the increasing incidence of obesity in Canada: causes, consequences and the way forward. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 22.)

WITNESSES:

BC Healthy Living Alliance:

The Honourable Mary Collins, P.C., Director of the Secretariat.

Exercise is Medicine Canada:

Dr. Jonathon Fowles, Core Faculty.

As an individual:

Nina Teicholz, Investigative Journalist and Author, The Big Fat Surprise (by video conference).

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Collins and Mr. Fowles each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:33 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:37 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Teicholz made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:24 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
