The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:34 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the deputy chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Enverga, Lovelace Nicholas, Moore, Patterson, Raine, Sibbeston and Tannas (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Watt (1).

In attendance: Brittany Collier and Alexandre Lavoie, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 18, 2016, the committee continued its study on best practices and on-going challenges relating to housing in First Nation and Inuit communities in Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut and the Northwest Territories.

WITNESSES:

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada:

Stephen Van Dine, Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Affairs Organization;

Allan MacDonald, Director General, Implementation Branch, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;

Elizabeth Logue, Director, Inuit Relations Directorate, Northern Affairs Organization.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation:

Charles MacArthur, Senior Vice President, Regional Operations and Assisted Housing;

Duncan Hill, Manager, Housing Needs Research;

Luisa Atkinson, Director, First Nation Housing.

The chair made a statement.

Messrs. MacArthur and Van Dine each made a statement and, together with Messrs. Hill and MacDonald, Ms. Logue and Ms. Atkinson, answered questions.

At 11:33 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
