The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Jane Cordy, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Bernard, Cordy, Cormier, McCallum, Ngo, Pate and Wells (8).

In attendance: Jean-Philippe Duguay and Alexandra Smith, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; and Ben Silverman, Communications Officer, Senate Communications Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 20, 2018, the committee continued to examine and monitor issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 34.)

WITNESSES:

Public Safety Canada:

John Davies, Director General, National Security Policy.

Canada Border Services Agency:

Andrew Lawrence, Acting Director General, Travellers Programs Directorate.

Transport Canada:

Wendy Nixon, Director General, Aviation Security.

No Fly List Kids:

Khadijah Cajee, Co-Founder.

As an individual:

Bashir Ahmed Mohamed.

Sarah Willson, Parent.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Davies, Mr. Lawrence, and Ms. Nixon each made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:25 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:29 p.m., the committee resumed.

It was agreed:

That Leila Almawy have permission to film the No Fly List Kids participants during the meeting today, for the purposes of a documentary film.

Ms. Cajee, Mr. Mohamed, and Ms. Willson each made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
