The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 1:31 p.m., in the Acadian Room of the Crowne Plaza Moncton Downtown, the chair, the Honourable René Cormier, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, McIntyre, Mégie, Moncion and Poirier (6).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the committee continued to examine and report on Canadians' views about modernizing the Official Languages Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

WITNESSES:

As individuals:

Érik Labelle Eastaugh, Director, International Observatory on Language Rights, Université de Moncton;

Karine McLaren, Director, Centre for Legal Translation and Terminology, Université de Moncton.

Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick:

Rachel Maillet Bard, Chair;

Sylvio Boudreau, First Vice-President;

Josée Rioux-Walker, Sector Advisor-Trades and Justice.

The chair made an opening statement.

The Honourable Senator Moncion moved:

That the communications staff be authorized to take photos during the meeting.

The question being put on the motion, it was carried.

Mr. Labelle Eastaugh made a statement and answered questions.

At 2:29 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:42 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Maillet Bard, Mr. Boudreau, Ms. Rioux-Walker and Ms. McLaren made statements and answered questions.

At 3:54 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
