The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Eggleton, P.C., Frum, Merchant, Ogilvie, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Meredith (1).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, the committee began its consideration of Bill S-211, An Act respecting National Sickle Cell Awareness Day.

WITNESSES:

Sponsor of the bill:

The Honourable Senator Jane Cordy, sponsor of the bill.

Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada SCDAC:

Lanre Tunji-Ajayi, President and Director General.

The chair made and opening statement.

The Honourable Senator Cordy and Ms. Tunji-Ajayi each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:09 a.m., it was agreed that the committee proceed to clause -by-clause consideration of Bill S-211, An Act respecting National Sickle Cell Awareness Day.

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that the preamble carry.

It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, carry.

It was agreed that clause 2 carry.

It was agreed that clause 3 carry.

It was agreed that the title carry.

It was agreed that the bill carry.

It was agreed that the chair report the bill to the Senate.

At 11:11 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
