The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:15 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Cormier, Dean, Eggleton, P.C., Mégie, Merchant, Meredith, Neufeld, Ogilvie, Petitclerc, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (13).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Mireille LaForge, Procedural Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, the committee began its study on the role of robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence in the healthcare system.

WITNESSES:

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Jane E. Aubin, Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President, Research, Knowledge Translation and Ethics.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada:

Bettina Hamelin, Vice President, Research Partnerships;

Pamela Moss, Director, Manufacturing, Communications and Technologies (MCT), Research Partnerships.

National Research Council Canada:

Dr. Roman Szumski, Vice President, Life Sciences;

Robert Diraddo, Section Head Simulation & Digital Health, Medical Devices.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Aubin, Ms. Hamelin and Dr. Szumski each made a statement and, together with Mr. Diraddo, answered questions.

At 6:03 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:05 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera for consideration of a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portion of the meeting.

The chair informed the committee that pursuant to the motion adopted in the Senate chamber on December 7, 2016, the Honourable Senator Petitclerc would be the fourth member of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

At 6:17 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
