Saturday, December 10, 2022 – Senator Ratna Omidvar (second from right) participates in a panel discussion in Toronto about women-led protests in Iran for the United Nations’ “Orange The World” campaign. Organized by the Consul General of the Netherlands and the Diaspora Film Festival, the panel included (from left) human rights activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam MacKay; California State University Professor Emerita Nayereh Tohidi; Ramin Jahanbegloo, Vice-Dean of the School of Law at Jindal Global University in Delhi, India; and MP Ali Ehsassi. During the discussion, Senator Omidvar amplified the voice of the Iranian people and supported their fight for freedom.


Monday, January 9, 2023 – Senator Rob Black speaks to Grade 10 civics students at F. E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, Ontario. During the SENgage event, he spoke about the Senate’s role, his path to the Senate, and his work as a senator. Senator Black also highlighted his agricultural background and how it serves him in his role as chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.


Wednesday, January 11, 2023 – Senator Paula Simons, left, visits a Grade 6 class at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School in Edmonton, Alberta. She spoke about the role of the Senate and students asked questions about the life of a senator.


Saturday, January 14, 2023 – Young bilingual leaders of French for the future meet Senator Paula Simons as part of a SENgage event. The senator answered questions about the Senate’s role in Parliament and she offered advice on podcasting. 


Sunday, January 15, 2023 – Senator Tony Loffreda participates in a SENgage event with the Polish Scouts Association of Montréal. The senator spoke about the role of the Senate in Parliament, the work of senators and his path to the Senate. During the event, the scouts also debated the merits and limitations of select Senate bills. Senator Loffreda listened to each group’s debate and provided advice on how participants structured their arguments for or against each bill.


Monday, January 16, 2023 – Senator Salma Ataullahjan, second from right, and her daughter, Western University Assistant Professor Anuskha Ataullahjan, right, meet with Tammi Sharpe, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) Deputy Representative in Pakistan, and UNHCR External Relations Officer Letitia Dragomir. They discussed Afghan refugees and the impact of floods.


Wednesday, January 18, 2023 – Senator Bernadette Clement meets with fourth-year students in Brock University’s Law Plus program. She spoke to students about her journey to the Senate, her time as mayor of Cornwall, Ontario, and her career as a legal aid lawyer.


Wednesday, January 18, 2023 – Senator Paula Simons, sitting to the left in the back row, visits Grade 1 students at Blueberry School in Stony Plain, Alberta. The senator read books to the class and spoke about the Senate.

Thursday, January 19, 2023 – From left, senators Paula Simons, Karen Sorensen and Patti LaBoucane-Benson wear their Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medals after receiving the honour from Alberta Lieutenant-Governor Salma Lakhani. Alberta’s government has awarded the medals to those who have made significant contributions to the province.


Friday, January 20, 2023 –Senator Rosemary Moodie, left, poses with Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell at a celebration of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander’s legacy. The event, organized by LINC Project, included the unveiling of a bust of Alexander, who was Canada’s first Black MP. The bust will be installed at Queen’s Park and become part of the educational programs and tours at the legislature. Senator Moodie delivered remarks during the event.

Sunday, January 22, 2023 – Senator Mobina S.B. Jaffer (centre) meets with students of Professor Adel Gamar’s leadership course at UBC Sauder School of Business. Senator Jaffer talked about her life, her work in the Senate and gave advice to the students.
