Senators continue low-carbon economy study in Montreal

Members of the Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources continue their study on Canada’s transition to a low-carbon economy with a fact-finding mission to Montreal, February 7 and 8, 2017.

Their agenda included meetings with a provincial farmers association, renewable energy producers and a plant tour of clean energy leader CanmetENERGY. Also on deck was a panel discussion with McGill University engineering students and faculty, hosted by the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED).

In March 2016, the committee began to study how Canada can meet its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets under the 2015 Paris climate change agreement.

Senators are looking at five sectors of the national economy responsible for 80% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions: electricity, oil and gas, transportation, buildings and industries that are energy-intensive or sensitive to international trade.

The committee is scheduled to present its final report in September 2017, which will include recommendations to the government. It is releasing interim reports on a sector-by-sector basis.
