The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 4:15 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Chaput, Cochrane, Cook, Eggleton P.C., Fairbairn, P.C., Keon, Munson, Pépin and Trenholme Counsell (11).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos, Research Analyst, Science and Technology Division and Tim Riordan-Raaflaub, Political and Social Affairs Division.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 29, the committee began its study on the future of literacy programs in Canada.

WITNESSES:

National Indigenous Literacy Association:

Priscilla George (Ningwakwe), National Speaker.

Laubach Literacy of Canada:

Gay Hamilton, Executive Director.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada:

Marie-Josée Thivierge, Assistant Deputy Minister, Learning Branch;

Andrew Treusch, Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy and Planning.

Priscilla George (Ningwakwe) and Gay Hamilton each made a statement and, together, the witnesses answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., Andrew Treusch and Marie-Josée Thivierge each made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:40 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
